FlightGear on Intel integrated graphics 4500m

Postby Lightman on Mon Nov 02, 2009 12:49 pm

Hi guys,

I've kinda promised my mum my lovely glass Imac because they have moved to a smaller house and don't have the space for a big PC; so I'm thinking of buying a laptop. Most of the one's I've been looking at have the Intel 4500 integrated graphics. Now I know these cards are slow, but I'm just wondering if anybody has tried FlightGear on them.

Many thanks Lightman

Hi Lightman,

I haven't seen anything about the 4500 in particular, but in general people have found that Intel Integrated graphics doesn't do OpenGL hardware acceleration, so is too slow to realistically run FG, even with all the eye-candy switched off.

I recently bought a laptop for educational use and tested the CVS version of FlightGear on it. It has Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics. I got about 10 FPS at a busy multiplayer KSFO. I only tried the drivers supplied by Microsoft Update, so perhaps it will perform better if one install a newer driver.

Avoid Intel Graphics at all costs, it's just that simple. They are slow, they burn system resources (especially memory bandwidth) and the driver situation for OpenGL is depressing. New MacBook with nVidia 9400M is just $999! :)

Geez; surely if they're *that* easy to come by, you'll send me one for Christmas, yes?

If you end up with a 4500, you can probably still be ATC

Hi guys, thanks for all your reply's.

What would be really useful, is if anybody has used FlightGear with the 4500 chipset, otherwise I think I might stick FlightGear on a USB pendrive and visit my local computer store, lol.

Thanks

Maybe you can persuade them to run FG as a demo on the machines they have on display 8)

Hi guys,

I went to the computer store and tried FlightGear on a Toshiba laptop with 3GB of ram, T3000 processor and the 4500M Intel chip. At San Francisco with all specials off and running it at 1024 x 768 (no Atlas) I was getting 9-12 FPS on the default runway. Compared to my Imac 28 -33 FPS 1680 x 1050, everything maxed out and with Atlas running, it was a dit of a disappointment.

Anyway to cut a long story short; I sorted out my mum with a space saving PC (which she's happy with) and I got to keep my mac, lol.

Long live FlightGear on the Mac :D .

Thanks for all your help.
