Sound issues with Ubuntu 9.10

Postby wildbillkelso on Thu Nov 05, 2009 11:53 am

Hi all.

I have enjoyed the older version of flightgear using Ubuntu. I have installed the latest version of Ubuntu and Flightgear, and have some nasty distortion in the sound. Flightgear is not the only application I have problems with. The OS sounds, and cd playback are fine. I have posted on the Ubuntu forum, but have not had any responses as yet after a few days.
Fixing problems with Ubuntu is obviously not a problem for here, but I wondered if there Is any difference in the way the latest version of Flightgear uses sound, from the last version?

Many thanks for any help or advice offered.

Best regards.

I have the same exact issue - ubuntu 9.10 64 bit athlon

two issues unrelated - webcam doesn't work anymore, and flightgear sound. it starts out good, but when the motor gets up to speed, it goes into complete static.

if I find a solution, I'll post it here.

If pulseaudio is used, then try disabling it and see if that helps. About all I can think of off the top of my head.

Hi Tuxklok.

I have the same issues with TORCS, using Openal or PLIB for sound.

All the best.

OpenAL, PLIB, etc, all use the underlying sound system...ALSA. Ubuntu, for reasons unknown seems to like routing that through pulse audio, causing problems for many users. Make sure pulse audio is not enabled, and that you are actually using ALSA directly.

Without more to go on...that's all I can think of to try.

cheers!

Hi all.

I could not get it sorted in Ubuntu 9.10 but just installed Xubuntu 9.10 64 bit and everything is fine.
Hope this helps.

All the best.

Hello

The workaround is to create an empty file in the home directory with name .alsoftrc and writing this line
drivers = oss
I tried with drivers = pulse but Flightgear hangs; another posibility is drivers = alsa. You have to check wich one is the best for you.

have a look to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/403363
and http://www.pulseaudio.org/wiki/PerfectS ... plications

Yoohoo!

Incredible, adding drivers = oss really helped here (9.10) ! I have spent the whole day yesterday fumbling with pulseaudio,
even wasted my system into command line (no more gnome  ) !
Thanks a lot!

Greetings,
Adrian
